Qantas To Overhaul International Routes

Posted: June 24th, 2011

According to Australian Business Traveller, Qantas plans to substantially overhaul its international operations, with plans to announce the changes on August 24. CEO Alan Joyce warns that he will “cast a ruthless and honest eye over non-performing and unsustainable parts of the business.” He further stated that Qantas will be taking better advantage of its Oneworld relationships, meaning there will be more joint ventures. Joyce cited the Qantas-British Airways codeshare relationship as a model for the new operation. Qantas' international arm is in the red about A$5 billion, equal to about 38% of Qantas’ total assets. The airline is also facing a loss of over $206 million in weather-related impacts this year with $21 million of that due to the Chilean ashcloud disruption flight cancellations and disruptions. Stay tuned for Qantas’ announcement with more details on August 24.
