Snow continues to disrupt travel across Europe

According to the Seattle Times, hundreds of flights out of London and Frankfurt were cancelled this weekend as snow continues to block runways, causing highway accidents and disrupting rail service continent-wide. In London, Gatwick airport shut its runway until dusk and British Airways canceled all daytime Saturday flights out of Heathrow Airport while it waited for the latest snowstorm to pass. Civil aviation authorities in France cancelled 15 percent of flights at Charles de Gaulle airport on Saturday, and Frankfurt airport reported that, although their runways were clear of ice, many planes could not take off this weekend because airports at several key European destinations, including Croatia and Pisa, were shut down. The icy weather also swept over large parts of Scandinavia, causing problems particularly in Denmark, where dozens of flights were canceled at the Copenhagen airport. Sweden reports the country is experiencing the coldest winter weather this early on in the season since the mid-1800s.
