According to USCA, the union representing Spain's air traffic controllers, members have voted to strike in mid-August to protest against pay cuts and changes to their job conditions. An exact strike date for the industrial action, likely to cause chaos in the nation's airports at the height of the busy tourist season, is still to be decided. In February, the Spanish government ended collective bargaining talks after failing to reach an agreement with air traffic controllers and opened the area to competitive service providers. The Spanish media is critical of the air traffic controllers’ high salaries and short working hours as the country cuts public workers’ pay in an effort to ease the country’s deficit and allay its government debts.
